What is Onigiri Sun?

The reason we started Onigiri Sun is to introduce the traditional Japanese food, Onigiri (rice balls), to the US people. By doing so, we hope they can experience the deliciousness of Japanese rice and the wonderful aspects of Japanese cuisine. Through this, we aim to widely promote Japanese food and ingredients in the US area and spark interest in Japan’s culture and the regions where these ingredients are produced. We hope this will serve as a bridge for mutual exchange between Japan and the United States.

Although our store is still small, we are working hard to expand our business so that as many people as possible can enjoy the delicious taste of Japanese onigiri.

The Specialty of Our Onigiri

We are committed to using high-quality, Japanese-grown ingredients for the key components of our Onigiri: Rice, Nori, and Salt. This ensures that you can enjoy the authentic taste of traditional Japanese Onigiri. Additionally, every Onigiri is handmade fresh after you place your order, so you can experience the warmth and care put into each one.

Our Onigiri is more than 1.5 times the size of a regular serving, and it is packed with generous fillings. The rice is not tightly packed, which gives it a light, fluffy texture that creates a new eating experience. After enjoying it, you’ll be left with a great sense of satisfaction and delight.

We offer over 20 types of fillings, ranging from traditional Japanese ingredients like umeboshi (pickled plum) and kombu (seaweed) to local favorites like fried chicken, Spam, and cream cheese. You can also customize your Onigiri by choosing up to three different fillings in one, allowing you to enjoy the fun of making your own combination and the excitement of trying new flavors.

The History of Onigiri

Onigiri has been eaten in Japan for over 2,000 years, and originally, it was considered a sacred food used for offerings to the gods or as a protective charm against evil spirits. It is said that the triangular shape of onigiri is inspired by the shape of mountain gods' peaks. Over time, Onigiri became a convenient form of food for carrying and preserving, and it was used by Samurai as a portable food during wartime or as a lunch during work. It gradually spread to the common people and became a staple food eaten during agricultural work or on outings. Today, Onigiri continues to evolve as a beloved "soul food" of Japan, and its ability to offer the taste of Japan in a convenient form has made it a globally recognized and appreciated food beyond Japan.

Onigiri as a Healthy Food

The main ingredients of onigiri—Rice, Nori, and Salt—work together as a harmonious trio that provides numerous health benefits. Cooked rice is not only a source of carbohydrates but also contains essential vitamins B and E, minerals, and dietary fiber, making it a gluten-free food. Nori, being a type of seaweed, is rich in minerals, vitamins, and calcium, and it helps support the digestion of rice. In addition, we use sea salt (specifically "mo-shio") in our onigiri, contains minerals that help aid the digestion and absorption of both the Rice and Nori. As for the fillings, we offer a wide variety of vegan and gluten-free options, making our onigiri suitable for those with dietary restrictions and allowing everyone to enjoy them with peace of mind.

We look forward to your visit and use.

Onigiri is a Japanese fast food that can be easily eaten anytime, anywhere for lunch, a snack, or dinner.
